Cross-cutting analysis Research brief
Screen hours and sleep loss, read together carefully
Why two co-occurring figures are not yet a causal finding.
58.1% of the cohort — 232 of 399 respondents — answered 3 to 6 hours when asked “What is your average daily smartphone screen time?”. The next-largest answer, more than 6 hours, accounts for 28.1% (112), a gap of 30 percentage points. A second question in the same instrument — “How frequently do you face sleep challenges (insomnia, late sleep, waking up tired)?” — puts 40.9% on rarely.
Key figures
- 58.1% (232 of 399) answered 3 to 6 hours on “What is your average daily smartphone screen time?”.
- The top two answers are separated by 30 percentage points, and the smallest category still covers 55 respondents.
- On the companion question “How frequently do you face sleep challenges (insomnia, late sleep, waking up tired)?”, 40.9% selected rarely.

<p>Source: <a href="https://journal.moyanai.app/journal/kerala-gen-z-survey-2026">The Kerala Gen Z Report 2026</a>, Moyan AI.</p>What the primary figure shows#
The full distribution for “What is your average daily smartphone screen time?” (n = 399) is: 3 to 6 hours — 58.1% (232); More than 6 hours — 28.1% (112); Less than 3 hours — 13.8% (55).
The cohort is clearly concentrated on this question. A single option carries 58.1% of responses, so the headline figure is stable enough to plan against. The smallest recorded answer, less than 3 hours, still represents 55 people — a group large enough to matter in programme design even at 13.8%.
Reading the two figures together#
“How frequently do you face sleep challenges (insomnia, late sleep, waking up tired)?” (n = 399) returns: Rarely — 40.9% (163); A few times a week — 30.8% (123); Almost every night — 15.3% (61); Never — 13% (52).
Placed beside the primary figure, this measure spreads more evenly, with the leading answer at 40.9%. Read together, the two questions describe cross-cutting analysis as a pattern reported across the cohort rather than an issue confined to a minority of respondents.
How far these figures can be read#
The sample is a community-recruited cohort of 399 respondents surveyed between 21 May and 28 June 2026. Figures describe this cohort; they are not state-level prevalence estimates and should not be reported as such.
The composition of the sample also shapes the totals: 74.4% of respondents fall in the older student and early-career band, and 72.7% identify as male. Any reading by gender, district or occupation needs disaggregated fieldwork this instrument was not designed to deliver.
The instrument records one moment in time, so nothing here identifies a cause or a trend. Statements about mechanism in this brief are interpretive and flagged as such.
