Finding 6 of 7 Entrepreneurship

High appetite for enterprise, no scaffolding

Two thirds want to build something, but mentorship and awareness of state startup support are close to absent.

The Kerala Gen Z Report 2026 · n = 399 · fieldwork 21 May – 28 June 2026 · CC BY 4.0

65.2% of respondents want to start a venture in Kerala and 79.2% of those would try again after a failure — but 43.5% say the biggest barrier is the absence of mentorship, and 52.3% have never heard of Kerala Startup Mission's schemes.

Appetite is high and risk tolerance is higher#

65.2% express strong interest in starting a business, startup or local venture. Within that group, 70.0% would actively prefer entrepreneurship to a secure government or corporate job.

Risk tolerance is the surprise. Asked how they would react if their venture collapsed within two years, 79.2% say they would absorb the lessons and pivot to another attempt. 10.8% predict a mental breakdown and debt anxiety; 10.0% would abandon business over social stigma. The fear-of-failure narrative usually attached to Indian founders is not what this cohort reports.

The binding constraint is guidance, not capital#

43.5% name the total lack of business mentorship, incubation cells and networking as the single greatest structural barrier. Bureaucratic delay and licensing complexity follow at 25.8%, inability to secure seed capital or collateral-free loans at 18.5%, and family pressure at 12.3%.

Capital ranks third. That is unusual and worth stating plainly, because most youth-enterprise interventions lead with funding. On this evidence, a mentor-and-network intervention would relieve more than twice as much friction as a loan scheme.

State support exists and is not reaching them#

52.3% of entrepreneurship-interested respondents are completely unaware that Kerala Startup Mission's grants, incubation cells and funding tools exist. 36.9% have heard the name but know nothing about the schemes. 10.8% understand how to apply.

Kerala's startup infrastructure is among the more developed in India. The gap measured here is distribution, not provision — and it maps directly onto the mentorship complaint above, since incubation is exactly what respondents say is missing.

Social permission is split#

45.0% believe local society celebrates young entrepreneurs as innovative community leaders. 38.8% report heavy suspicion of business as an unstable gamble, and 16.2% say founders are seen as people who could not get a proper job. Roughly a 45/55 split between encouragement and doubt.
