Generative AI has saturated Kerala's campuses faster than any policy response — a single respondent in 399 has never used it.

57.9% of respondents use generative AI tools such as ChatGPT daily or for almost all academic work. 37.8% use them occasionally. Exactly one respondent in 399 has never used them.
Adoption is effectively total#
95.7% of respondents use generative AI at least occasionally for academic work, and 57.9% use it daily or for almost every assignment. 4.0% use it extremely rarely. The never-users number one person.
For context, this is a rural-weighted sample: 80.7% live in a Grama Panchayat. AI adoption among Kerala students is not an urban, elite or professional-course phenomenon. It has already reached the general arts and science cohort in village panchayats.
AI slotted into a vacuum, not a queue#
Read alongside the education block, the timing explains itself. Half the cohort was already learning skills from free internet material and 72.9% did not trust their syllabus to make them employable. Generative AI did not displace a functioning system; it filled a gap students had already routed around with YouTube.
That framing changes the policy question. Detection and prohibition assume AI is competing with instruction students value. This data suggests it is competing with instruction they have already discounted.
Assessment is the exposed surface#
If 57.9% of a cohort uses generative AI for almost all assignments, take-home written assessment no longer measures what it is assumed to measure. Kerala universities have not published adoption figures at this granularity; this dataset is offered as a starting baseline that others are free to reuse, extend or contradict.
